Organizational Accomplishments in 2006

Learning Connections focuses on preventing severe
academic difficulties or school failure by providing early
intensive reading and math instruction for children in the early
grades. Specially-trained teachers work with students in small
groups to help close the achievement gap for the Twin Cities’
neediest students.
• 662 children served (up 60% from the previous year)
• .8 to 1.2 grade levels gained in reading with 30 hours of
instruction
• partnerships with 18 public, private, and alternative schools

Transition Connections partners with urban and suburban
middle and high schools and youth-serving agencies to help
students with learning disabilities and attention deficits gain
self-awareness; knowledge about career, financial
management, and training opportunities; and self-advocacy
skills that will help them make informed decisions about their
future and increase the likelihood of their success and selfsufficiency.
• 197 youths gained skills in career planning
• 100% reported increased self-knowledge and awareness of
career opportunities.
• 38 teachers received professional development in transition best
practices
• 27 parents were trained to support their child in transitioning
from high school

Assessment and Tutoring Services include learning
disabilities assessments, early reading assessments, individual
consultations, and 1:1 or small group tutoring services to
assist children, youth, and adults throughout Minnesota to
improve their learning strategies and skills to meet their
academic, vocational, and personal goals.

needs and maximize their strengths.

Adult Connections improves the quality of teaching,
employability, and learning for adults with learning disabilities

training and consultation to build the capacity of teachers,
supervisors, and volunteers. LDA’s cutting-edge research and

barriers for students in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) system
statewide.

• 365 educational products developed by LDA were provided to
ABE professionals

Parents as Partners engages and enables parents to

children’s learning. The program builds parent confidence to
use their own strategies, and then empowers them with new
tools, strategies, skills, and practical information that are
sensitive to their culture and life situations.
• 491 parents were served with workshops and consultations
• 95% reported gains in knowledge; 75% gained confidence to act

ADHD Services include workshops, support groups, and free
telephone consultations on the special issues and needs of
individuals and families experiencing attention deficits. In
September, 2005, LDA acquired Attention Deficits Support
Services, a small nonprofit organization with which LDA shared
target populations, services, and goals. Approximately 30% of
individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
also have a learning disability. By merging the two
organizations, LDA offers clients a more comprehensive range
of services.
• 561 people attended one or more ADHD workshops
• 83% reported increased their knowledge and understanding of
ADHD
