History of LDA

Five professional educators founded Learning Disabilities Association, Inc. (LDA), originally incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1967 under the name of Education for Learning Disabilities, Inc. After attending The Reading Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, they recognized an opportunity to address an unmet need within the educational community and formed a professional association of tutors. The founders began tutoring in their homes, eventually housing the organization’s services in an established community center in 1974 under the name eLDA Reading and Math Clinic, now referred to as LDA Learning Center.

As the organization grew and became more recognized for its expertise in the area of learning disabilities, LDA developed many partnership programs with public and private schools, colleges and postsecondary training institutions, and adult literacy programs to focus on solutions that fulfilled its mission. Throughout the organization’s 34-year history, LDA has provided direct service to thousands of Minnesotans to overcome learning difficulties in the classroom, make a successful transition from school to the workplace, and gain the knowledge and skills to obtain and maintain productive and fulfilling employment.

In 2003, LDA became the state affiliate of LDA of America, a national nonprofit organization made up of volunteers dedicated to dedicated to information, advocacy, research and education focused on learning disabilities. This positioning and programming focus has made LDA the leader in learning disabilities in Minnesota and enabled the organization to provide direct service to thousands of Minnesotans to overcome learning difficulties in the classroom, make a successful transition from school to the workplace, and gain the knowledge and skills to obtain and maintain productive and fulfilling employment.
